Instagram Account Warmup Guide for DM Outreach
Account warmup is the most important step before running Instagram DM campaigns. Skip it and your account gets restricted within days. Follow it and you'll have an account that runs campaigns reliably for months.
What Is Instagram Account Warmup?
Instagram account warmup is the process of gradually increasing activity on a new (or dormant) Instagram account before using it for automated outreach. The goal is to establish a baseline of normal-looking behavior before running DM campaigns at volume.
Instagram's systems flag unusual activity patterns - an account that has never sent more than a few DMs suddenly sending 50 per day looks suspicious. An account that has been gradually increasing its DM volume over several weeks does not.
Why Warmup Matters
Accounts that skip warmup and jump straight into automated DM campaigns typically face restrictions within the first few days. These restrictions range from temporary DM blocks (a few hours) to more persistent action blocks affecting multiple account features.
Warmup is not just about DM limits - it's about establishing your account as a legitimate, human-operated profile before asking Instagram's systems to tolerate higher-than-average messaging activity.
Warmup Schedule: Week by Week
Before Day 1: Account Setup
Before any warmup activity:
- Upload a real profile photo
- Write a complete bio with a clear description
- Add a contact option (email or phone)
- Connect a proxy if using multiple accounts (one proxy per account)
- Post 3-5 pieces of content that match the account niche
Let the account sit for 48-72 hours after setup before starting any activity. This initial rest period helps the account register as newly-established rather than immediately suspicious.
Week 1: Manual Activity Only
No automation during week 1. All activity should be done manually through the Instagram app or web interface:
- Like 5-10 posts per day in your niche
- Leave 2-3 genuine comments on relevant posts
- Follow 5-10 accounts per day that match your target audience
- Send 3-5 manual DMs per day to real contacts (not cold prospects)
The goal is to establish an activity fingerprint that looks like a real user - not to start outreach.
Week 2: Light Automation
Begin using automation tools, but at minimal volume:
- 5-10 automated DMs per day to cold prospects
- Continue manual engagement (likes, comments) alongside automation
- Monitor for any warning messages or restrictions
Weeks 3-4: Gradual Increase
Increase DM volume by 5-10 messages per day, per week:
- Week 3: 15-20 DMs/day
- Week 4: 25-35 DMs/day
Month 2+: Scale Up
Continue increasing by 10-15 DMs/day per week until you reach your target volume. Most accounts can comfortably reach 50-80 DMs/day after 6-8 weeks of proper warmup. Some established accounts go higher.
Signs Your Warmup Is Working
- No DM restrictions or action blocks after several weeks
- DMs are being delivered (not bouncing silently)
- Account receives normal reply rates relative to message quality
- No "unusual activity" warnings from Instagram
Common Warmup Mistakes
- Starting automation on day 1: The account has no activity history. Instagram flags the instant volume change.
- Jumping volume too fast: Going from 10 to 100 DMs/day in a week is suspicious regardless of account age.
- No profile content: Empty accounts sending DMs are a strong spam signal.
- Ignoring proxy setup: Running multiple accounts from the same IP reduces warmup effectiveness and increases cross-account risk.
- Restarting after restriction without adjusting: Getting a restriction and immediately resuming at the same volume extends the restriction period.
Warmup for Multiple Accounts
If you're managing multiple Instagram accounts - for example, running campaigns for multiple clients - each account needs its own warmup process. A warmed account is not transferable.
For multi-account setups, we strongly recommend one dedicated proxy per account. Without separate IPs, Instagram can detect that multiple accounts are being operated from the same location and apply stricter limits across all of them.
WaveDM's multi-account sender supports proxy configuration per account and separate campaign management for each account. Read the DM limits guide for the specific volume thresholds that apply at each stage of warmup.
